Introduction to Prismatic Battery

Today’s growing trends for sustainable energy solutions, and EV’s, have given rise in demands of prismatic battery cells.

Prismatic battery cells are Lithium-ion batteries that have a rectangular shape. They offer enhanced energy density and efficient packaging. Due to their space efficient design, they have gained popularity among Electric Vehicles, and similar industrial applications which require renewable energy storage systems.

Structure of Prismatic cells and purpose for welding

Prismatic cells consist of various layers: Cathode, Anode, Electrolyte, Separator. These layers are critical for the overall performance of the cell.

For desired performance, the assembly must have proper electrical connectivity and also must be mechanically strong enough to hold the components together.

Laser Welding is used for joining and holding the assembly together.

Advantages of Laser Welding in Prismatic cells:

• Electrical Connectivity: Laser welding gives strong joints maintaining the minimal resistance. In prismatic cells, cathode and anode must have excellent electrical connectivity with least resistance to facilitate the flow of electrons. So, Laser Welding is helpful.
• Leak Proof: The assembly must be leak proof to prevent leakage of the electrolyte. Laser Welding gives Leak proof welds which protects the electrolyte from leaking.
• High Weld strength gives mechanical stability for the battery to withstand external impacts.
• Repeatability: Once proper parameters for welding are set, we get the same weld depth each time.
