Laser Hardening of Worm Shaft

Introduction to worm shaft :

A worm shaft is a very critical component, especially in gear systems which are used to transmit power and motion between non parallel shafts. Basic mechanism consists of a cylindrical shaft which is called a worm shaft and this worm shaft is engaged with worm gear during the operation.

Such an arrangement is widely used in industrial machineries, conveyor systems and also, in various automotive systems, which require high torque transmission and precise motion control.

Challenge:

As there is constant engagement between the worm shaft and its mating gear, over long periods of operation, worm shafts, over a period of time, wear out. Repeated sliding motion between mating gear and worm shaft can lead to friction, and lead to abrasive wear , deteriorating its overall mechanical properties and hence, affecting its performance, and can also lead to failure of the system.

Solution:

Laser Hardening is an advanced, and reliable solution to tackle this problem. It is a surface treatment method which is used to modify surface properties, surface hardness, wear and tear resistance of a material by precisely heating the surface with a high power Laser beam.

Mechanism of the process:

A high power Laser beam is focused on the worm shaft’s specific surface area which is in contact with the mating gear and subjected to impact. It is rapidly heated at a localized area, and bulk of the material acts as heat sink, resulting in a self quenching effect.
As a result, the microstructure of the layer undergoes phase transformation. It is transformed to martensite phase, making it more hard and durable.

Benefits of Laser Hardening:

  • Surface hardness and wear resistance of the worm shaft are significantly enhanced.
  • Precisely controlled localized heating minimizes the distortion, and maintains dimensional accuracy, and due to this advantage, Laser Hardening can be done even on finished components.
  • It enhances the load carrying capacity of the worm shaft which enables it to transmit higher torque.

Conclusion:

Laser Hardening has brought a new revolution in the industry by enhancing performance and durability of worm shafts and addressing the problems related to wear and tear in industrial machineries and mechanical systems.
